This challenging project converted a Tokyo apartment building—with one basement level and three aboveground floors, previously housing seven units—into a private home. Removing the interior walls and examining the concrete structure, we reoriented the formerly outward-facing building around a courtyard. The complex layout required careful integration of existing conditions with new spatial planning. White tones draw daylight into the interior, while a darker palette imbues the basement lounge with luxury. By leveraging the existing structure, the design creates a profound sense of scale.
