Entry Description

This project should be recognized for its programmatic success, as well as its sensitive placement along the lake front. With the assistance of the client, a civil engineer, the new home was able to be located 5’ lower than the original structure. This development of site creates a stronger connection to the landscape, and imparts the sensation of being on a plane with the water. Through its location on the site, the house becomes more integrated and understated when viewed from the street above.
The spatial layout of the house addresses the client’s needs to both raise their young twins and entertain guests. All private spaces have visual connections to the public living hall, and the overall massing creates an exterior courtyard which allows the landscape to erode into the house. The use of similar materials throughout – concrete, wood, and glass – blurs the line between interior and exterior.
