Zürich Tram Station Project

Improving quality of life
The Glattal municipalities and the Canton of Zurich wanted to encourage optimal economic development of the Middle Glattal. Two key elements of this effort are: using spatial planning to improve quality of life, and providing a balanced high quality supply of public and private transport infrastructure.
The requirements of the design consisted of developing conceptual plans for system components. To do this we followed a systematic design evaluation process focusing on six equally weighted quality goals. These consisted out of the three sustainability triangle goals: social, economic and environmental compatibility, supplemented by the project goals: safety, durability and enhanced serviceability. The design is the result of balancing these six quality objectives.

Continuous design
The stations, catenary system and infrastructure share a consistent design based on a distinctive systematic and modular architecture. Individual infrastructure elements contribute significantly to overall appearance and appreciation of the surrounding environment. The Glattalbahn’s design highlights relationships between spaces and their functions. Connections, access routes and paths are clearly apparent. Special measures are introduced at stations and in their surrounding areas to call attention to the tram system.

Industrial design
The Glattalbahn’s standard station components were tested by constructing a pilot station early in the project. This station was used to finetune the standard component design ensuring that it met the needs of all users. The uniform infrastructure design also brings significant cost advantages. Thanks to industrial production, economies of scale were achieved and costs were reduced – even for high quality items.
