Entry Description

A footbridge was required to allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross Butarque Park from side to side where it is traversed by a motorway under an expressway viaduct. The 165 m long bridge was designed as a continuous five-span steel-concrete composite deck with a triangular cross-section, which meanders between the piers of the viaduct. The reinforced concrete piers, with variable section rhombus-shaped shafts, are positioned at the arch mid-spans in the plan layout and, like the abutments, are monolithically connected to the deck. Overall, then, the system is a jointless bridge.
