Entry Description

The Hamlin School has educated girls to “meet the challenges of their time” for over 127 years. Comprised of three separate buildings stepping 65’ down a slope, the campus suffered from circulation challenges. The 3 buildings, constructed during 3 different eras, were disconnected from one another, and not designed to support the school’s modern pedagogy. The renovation/expansion project clarified the circulation and unified the campus. The approach stacked a tall gymnasium above an arts space deep in the center of the site, allowing classrooms to be north facing with large windows and views.

Bio

With clarity in form and function, and roots in their surroundings, Mark Cavagnero’s projects mirror and honor their communities. Since the firms founding in San Francisco in 1993, Mark Cavagnero has built the practice on flexible design, simple solutions, and a palette of elemental materials of glass, concrete, and wood. The firm’s consistent consideration of each project’s context has garnered clients’ trust, and has allowed the firm to drop architectural gems throughout the city of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area that tie their communities together.
