Entry Description

We developed Chilmark House as a pair of barns with low pitched roofs. The two buildings form a series of private courtyards and outdoor spaces. A broad stair links a large porch back to the farm road, providing pedestrian access to the beach. To produce the structural wood louvers, we built the Japanese Shou sugi ban charred boards. The northwest entry courtyard is edged by a mute, charred cedar wall, creating a private courtyard. Inside the dark buildings, bleached ash lines and lightens all surfaces. The lower level consists of bedrooms and shared spaces looking into landscaped light wells.
