Amalgamation strives to take a romanticized urban
plan and bring it to the 21st century. This is
accomplished through the consideration of current
and future trends in urban planning and learning
from poor planning of the past. In the words of Jane
Jacobs “Cities have the capability of providing
something for everybody, only because, and only
when, they are created by everybody.” This project
seeks to relieve some of the negative effects of urban
renewal, revitalizing the lost community.
Notions of urban renewal, such as the concept of
“blight” wiped away this area's culture and people.
Urban renewal of this area disconnected it from the
rest of the city, and limited it to an analogous usage.
With the reintroduction of the grid, as well as
diversified usages, Amalgamation both ties
Yamacraw’s past, as well as looks into the future
needs of this area and its people.
