This commissioned concept design for a new biological research laboratory in western China (the Institute for Nanobiomedical Technology and Membrane Biology at Sichuan University) borrows formal cues from microcellular structures found in nature to create architecture that expresses the explosive growth of understanding in the life sciences today.
The main programmatic goal is to create a living memorial to biology - an active world-class research center that stimulates conversation between members of the scientific community and laypersons around the world.
The Institute will house 250 scientists from across the life-sciences engaged in a wide range of multidisciplinary work, from investigating basic molecular mechanisms to developing treatments for disease.

I recently completed the Master of Industrial Design program at the
Rhode Island School of Design following a Bachelor of Science in
Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This
project was completed while I was a student at RISD in 2005. In 2006 I
began full time work as a designer and engineer at Kennedy & Violich
Architecture, Ltd. in Boston, MA. Professionally, I strive to unify
modes of thought from design and engineering to create new formal
languages that solve both the essential and inessential issues of
modern life.
