The Threshing Barn

Lead Designers
Prize(s)Bronze in Interior Design / Renovation
Entry Description

This Grade 2 listed building lay derelict for many years, before an adjoining owner purchased it with a view to turning it into a new house for their family designed to their own requirements. It was the subject of two planning applications, which took nearly 3 years in total to complete.

The vast majority of the original structure has survived. This clearly adds to the character of the finished building.

Natural materials have been used throughout and where historic/ contemporary elements meet shadow gaps have been introduced to highlight the juxtaposition. Practical additions such as interior rooms, staircases, kitchen and fireplaces form free standing geometric forms.

The central space houses the kitchen, which has been specifically designed to address the social and family requirements of the owners and responds beautifully to the open plan nature of the house. The kitchen can be seen in the round from all the major public spaces in the house. It acts as an integral part of the character of the house being both beautifully crafted and providing opportunities for social interaction. It is not hidden away but celebrated as the centrepiece and has the status of the most important space in the home.

JOHNNY GREY - Biography

Johnny Grey is a kitchen designer based in Hampshire, England who has been heralded as ?The World?s Best Kitchen Designer? by Metropolitan Home Magazine (New York) and the ?Kitchen Designer?s Designer? by Homes & Gardens (London). Inspired by his aunt ? the British food writer Elizabeth David ? he sees the kitchen as much more than just a place to cook; it represents the social heart of the modern home.

After graduating from the London Architectural Association School of Architecture in 1977, Grey set up a design studio and furniture workshop. In 1980, his reputation as a kitchen designer grew as he pioneered the concept of the ?unfitted? kitchen ? a philosophical idea relating to a more sociable design that incorporates free-standing furniture. His core design concepts focus on unfitted kitchen ergonomics, soft geometry, sociability in the kitchen, the blurring of indoor and outdoor environments and hard-wired elements of comfort.

His clients include Sting, Howard Jones, Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Steve Jobs. Grey is also the author of three books: The Art of Kitchen Design (1994), The Hard Working House: The Kitchen Work Book (1997) and Kitchen Culture (2004). In addition to his writing, he travels around the world as a lecturer at industry events and advises a variety of companies, such as Electrolux and Maytag.

In collaboration with Salford University Professor John Zeisel, Grey has recently been involved with neuroscience research projects studying architecture and well-being.
